amsterdam is a damn good time and, especially in the summer, kicking it for a few days in this city is hard to beat.   iconic canals, seemingly more bikes than people, cafes on every corner.  not to mention two of the best museums in europe- the outstanding van gogh museum with the largest collection of his works in the world and the powerful anne frank house, where anne and her family lived in a tiny annex before they were tragically betrayed and captured.  amsterdam has gentrified significantly since my last visit, with cool new neighborhoods springing up in previously seedy areas- the jordaan in particular is an amazing brooklyn-esque hood with hipster bars, restaurants and indie boutiques.  it is worth the trip alone to just walk the streets of this charming city and soak up the vibe.  or better yet, grab a bike and make like the locals.

this is a glorious little city. skip venice and come directly here in the summer. winter along these canals might just be a tad bit brutal but summer is celebrated here like i have not seen before. outdoor cafes are plentiful and omnipresent along seemingly miles and miles of even more omnipresent waterways. the red light district gets a bit touristy and lacks the genuine seediness and instead is a sort of 'seediness on display' for college folk. amsterdam needs to get on a marketing kick and sell itself as a mature trendy hipster flavorful scene rather than the 'weed is legal' approach. the anne frank house, heineken brewery tour and van gough museum are tremendous spots but just randomly walking throughout the alleys and canals and bridges with a beer (and/or more in hand) is the real treat.
